Georgetown expands support for transgender students
Georgetown University, a Catholic institution in Washington, D.C., has strengthened its support for transgender and non-binary students with expanded housing, healthcare, and academic programs centered on gender and identity.
Housing and healthcare resources
The university’s LGBTQ Resource Center offers gender-inclusive housing for students who identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming. This initiative lets students choose roommates without regard to gender, helping build a safer living environment.
A dedicated web page details resources for these students, including steps to update pronouns and legal names in university records. The center also provides free chest binders and connects students to gender-affirming healthcare.
Washington, D.C. Medicaid covers medically necessary treatments for transgender patients, such as hormone therapy and some surgeries. The university’s resource page includes links to legal advocacy groups and a bias incident reporting system.
Peer-led support spaces, including a Queer Support Space and a Trans and Non-Binary Support Space, offer discussions and resources tailored to identity-based needs.
Identity-focused academic programs
Georgetown integrates gender and identity studies into its curriculum. The Women’s and Gender Studies major includes concentrations in Sexuality Studies and Social Justice and Violence.
Coursework covers race and racism, media representations of gender, and feminist theory. The department describes the major as an interdisciplinary study of power, identity, and social structures.
A recent class, “Performing LGBTQ+ History”, required students to create theatrical performances using archival materials and oral histories from LGBTQ+ activists. The syllabus explained that students would develop monologues to highlight intersectional humanities in new ways.

The course featured drag performer LaWhore Vagistan, who has also led discussions at Harvard University about the political role of drag. The performer’s involvement gained attention after similar appearances at other campuses.
These academic options show how universities are reshaping identity-based studies. Some say such classes encourage deeper thinking about social issues, while others worry they emphasize advocacy over traditional scholarship. The discussion often focuses on how religious schools balance their values with student expectations.

Institutional context and response
Georgetown’s policies reflect a trend among universities offering gender-affirming resources, even as some states restrict such services. Its Catholic identity adds complexity, given the Vatican’s position on gender identity.
The university has not explained how its policies align with Catholic teachings. Officials have said Georgetown’s Jesuit values include “care for the whole person”, which the institution applies to LGBTQ+ students.
The new president, who began last year, has a background in campus activism and diversity initiatives. Under her leadership, programming around race, gender, and social justice has grown.
